AT&T’s best apps for kids’ devices: Comparing AT&T’s amiGO app vs. Secure Family app

Kids on cell phones

What is the AT&T amiGO app?

AT&T recently launched the new AT&T amiGO Jr. Tab™, a tablet for kids with an accompanying app that enables parental controls. It’s now available for purchase online and in select AT&T stores.

The AT&T amiGO app works with AT&T amiGO products only and is free to customers who purchase the AT&T AmiGO Jr. Tab. The app should be installed on the parent’s cell phone to enable parental controls, location tracking, safe browsing features, time limit management and contact list management.

Research shows that nearly 80% of parents want a tablet for their kids that allows them to efficiently and easily control device settings1. The AT&T amiGO app is designed to do just that.

What is the AT&T Secure Family app?

The AT&T Secure Family® app is designed for use with smartphones only. This app enables parental controls, location tracking, safe browsing features and time limit management. If you have safety in mind, the app enables you to set an alert when your child enters or leaves a saved area, and one press of a button sends an SOS alert to the whole family.

The AT&T Secure Family app is compatible across carriers, so it’s available to AT&T customers, as well as customers on Verizon, T-Mobile or other networks.

You can try the AT&T Secure Family app for free for the first thirty days of your subscription2, and there is a $7.99 charge per month after your first thirty days.

Download the AT&T Secure Family app in the Apple App Store or in the Google Play App Store.

What is the difference between the AT&T amiGO app and the AT&T Secure Family app?

While both the amiGO app and the Secure Family app are designed to enable parents to monitor and control their children’s device settings, the biggest difference between the two apps is the AmiGO app works with AT&T amiGO products, like the new AT&T amiGO Jr. Tab, while the AT&T Secure Family app works with smartphones and tablets.

Common questions about parental controls

How do I set up parental controls on my child’s cell phone?

Parental controls allow you to block access to inappropriate websites on your child’s device, limit the use of devices to particular times, manage who your child can call and message and who can contact them and control how much money your child can spend online, among other capabilities. The AT&T Secure Family app is a popular app, available across carriers, to help you set up parental controls.

To get started with the AT&T Secure Family app, first download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play App Store. You will also want to download the Secure Family companion app onto the smartphones of any other family members you want to include in your network. Keep in mind you can try the AT&T Secure Family app for free for the first thirty days of your subscription2, and there is a $7.99 charge per month after your first thirty days.

Next, follow these steps:

  • Open the app and create an account. This will be the primary account for your network.
  • Follow the prompts within the app to set up your account and add devices.
  • Allow location tracking and device notifications to enable the app’s features.
  • Set up filters and time limits on companion devices.
  • Track the device location of smartphones in your network.

How do I turn off data on my child’s cell phone?

With the AT&T Secure Family app, there are a couple options for turning off data on your child’s cell phone:

Scheduled Off Times

During an Off Time, internet access is blocked from allowed and unfiltered apps, websites, and categories on the child’s device. You can toggle the scheduled times on and off as needed. Keep in mind apps, websites, and categories set to Always Allow won’t be blocked during Off Times.

Block Internet

You can stop internet access to allowed and unfiltered apps and websites on a child’s device with the Block Internet option. You can also use the Block Internet feature if you don’t have any filters applied to a child’s profile. In that case, all internet-based apps and websites are blocked.

You have three ways to use the Block feature. You can block the internet for:

  • All devices on every child’s profile
  • All devices on one child’s profile
  • A single device on a child’s profile

How can I monitor my child’s text messages?

With AT&T Secure Family, you won’t be able to view the contents of your child’s text messages or control who they text with or call; however, there is an option to block third-party messaging apps, like WhatsApp and FaceTime, on your child’s phone.

If your child has the AT&T AmiGO Jr. Tab, the free AT&T amiGO app does enable contact list management.
